Miriam was six when Nazi Germany invaded her hometown of Warsaw, Poland. Her parents and brother were sent away, but a neighbor took Miriam in to keep her safe throughout the war. Unfortunately, her father and brother were killed. After the war her mother remarried and the couple made their way to Nicaragua before settling in New York. Edit credit: Alison Jacques
